LEGO Technic 42063 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Review: How to learn by creative play

I am a big fan of Technic Lego®. I love the challenge the kits offer my kids to finish the complete build of the different sets, compared to the original build sets. Kids get hands-on practice by playing with the advanced, realistic technical functions of the beams and plates, gears, axles, connectors and special parts, wheels, and tires and so on.

I love the idea to let kids learn through play since I believe that is the best way to let them explore new things and find new fields of interest.

Pros with your kids playing with Lego® Technic

  1. Kids are challenged to think in three dimensions by creative play.
  2. They learn how to follow and use instructions. If you skip something, then the result will not be as expected. The builder gets almost instant feedback.
  3. Kids develop their skills in problem-solving, organization, and planning by construction.
  4. It is a tool that is that challenge kids critical thinking.
  5. Boost kids creativity.
  6. Their motor development gets some practice.
  7. It is a fantastic tool to practice patience. If the builder gives up, then they will not finish, and there will not be a fully functional toy.
  8. LEGO® Technic toys are all compatible with all LEGO® construction sets for creative building.

Cons of letting your kids play with Lego® Technic

  1. It is not immediately intuitive.
  2. Requires the builder to think several steps ahead. (A lot of parental support is required in the beginning to help your kid to get started in a good way, which is not necessarily a bad thing).
  3. The sets have a price tag not everyone can afford. (Even though I say, you get what you pay for, a good quality toy).
  4. Your kids will likely lose their patience from time to time.
  5. A bazillion little pieces everywhere. (A good opportunity for parents to teach kids how to organize things to make it easier. As an example, all the pieces can be sorted by color).
  6. There will likely be a countless number of completed projects, decorating every level surface in your home.

Summary

My son got the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure set as a birthday gift from his uncle. He absolutely loves to build the sets together. It took him approx 1,5 days to put the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure together. He did it 99% by himself, and he is 8 years old. What an accomplishment!

In the review comments I have read, a lot of people mention that the motorcycle seems to be missing a seat. I agree it should not have been so difficult for the Lego engineers to add that, or?

The motorcycle measures over 7″ (18cm) high, 13″ (33cm) long and 3″ (10cm) wide.

One thing is for sure, your kids will get a rewarding building experience with this 2-in-1 LEGO® Technic model, which has all the features of the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure.

So, go and get your own BMW R 1200 GS Adventure.
