Easy Science Experiments For Kids: Cola vs Cola Zero

In this experiment, we will explore the difference between a can of Cola and a can of Cola Zero in water. This one will not take long to perform, but it is really fascinating. This is an experiment about density – what floats and what doesn’t? And why is it so?

Remember to start the experiment with a hypothesis, what do you think will happen?

Read this first.

Material included:

  • A Cola can (unopened)
  • A Cola Zero can (unopened)
  • Water

Additional things you will need:

  • A bucket or a big bowl


  1. Fill a bucket or a big bowl with water so that a small soda-can can not bottom.
  2. Take your Cola and Cola Zero and drop them gently in the water.
  3. What happens?
  4. Why?


The Cola can contain sugar, which is missing in the Cola Zero can.

The Cola Zero can contain sweeteners which has a higher density than water and that is what causes the Cola Zero can to float.
